All the usual runners arrived North of the border for the latest round of the BP championship and it was Modus that dominated practice with new boy Eddie Cheever and Danny Sullivan setting the first and third fastest times. Patrick Neve in the Safir split the two Americans at the front of the grid.
The field got away cleanly at the flag but as the cars entered the first corner with several drivers already dropping wheels off the track Eddie Cheever’s engine gave out and in the avoiding action that followed Alex Ribeiro, Richard Hawkins and Rupert Keegan made contact. All three were able to continue but Keegan’s March lost its damaged nosecone during the lap. At the next right hander Hervé Regout dropped his March 753 reducing the field by one. Out in front Neve was leading Sullivan and Gunnar Nilsson, next up Ingo Hoffman was ahead of Graham Hamilton who was having a good run in the Ecurie Ecosse March 753.
Over the remaining laps the field became more and more straggled out with no further changes of position amongst the leaders allowing Patrick Neve to take a comfortable victory. There was a protest after the race from the Modus team that Neve’s car had been started on a slave battery but it was confirmed that a recent RAC rule change now permitted this.
