A huge entry of 75 cars arrived at Monza to try and win the latest round of the BP Championship. Due to the size of the entry there were four qualifying sessions which would decide the runners for the two 10 lap heats, the fastest 25 would make the final.

Larry Perkins set the fastest overall time one second under the circuit lap record, second quickest was the works March of Alex Ribeiro. Gunnar Nilsson was a disappointed non-starter, on a quick lap the Swede’s March clipped a kerb and was launched in the air, the 753 flipped over several times. The chassis was written off and Nilsson was lucky to escape with no worse damage than having the paint scraped off the top of his helmet. Conny Andersson’s team-mate Gianni Savoia also wrote off his March 753 in an end-over-end accident on the day before qualifying so the March factory would be busy making some new tubs.

Ribeiro took the win in Heat 1 from the similar March-Toyota 753 of Italian Gianfranco Brancatelli with the year old March of Richard Hawkins third. Savoia didn’t endear himself to his team by writing off a second tub at one of the chicanes, Pierre Dieudonné had to spin his B&O March in avoidance and fell to the back of the field and missed the cut for the final. Also involved in the aftermath of Savoia’s accident was the second works Modus of Swiss Fritz Stehlin who was struck by some of the wreckage which broke his shoulder. Amazingly Stehlin struggled to the finish holding the steering wheel between his knees and his uninjured arm, he didn’t qualify for the final although even if he had his injury would have precluded him from starting. Others in difficulty were Patrick Neve having a one-off outing in the ex-works Lotus 73B now run by Dr Joseph Ehrlich, he started 21st and a down on power engine saw him finish 15th. The usual Ehrlich of Tony Rouff retired after contact with a chicane tore out a radius rod from the chassis.

The second heat was a walkover for Larry Perkins as the works Ralt lead from start to finish, to add to the bad day at the office for Modus Danny Sullivan who had qualified seventh fell back through the field with a misfire and failed to make the final.

The final was initially a battle between three men, Larry Perkins, Alex Ribeiro and Fernando Spreafico (GRD 374). Perkins soon began to draw away from the other two men who then became embroiled in a particularly hairy battle for second. As the March and GRD had their final run to the flag Ribeiro administered a huge chop to Spreafico and the unfortunate Italian found himself crossing the line sideways and on the wrong side of the marker cones that delineate the new track from the old. For his pains Ribeiro found himself disqualified for dangerous driving after the organisers had viewed the incident on closed circuit TV. Of the other runners Richard Hawkins spun out whilst Graham Hamilton had been running well in sixth in the Ecurie Ecosse March until he too gyrated off the track. Conny Andersson (March 753) and Monaco winner Renzo Zorzi (GRD 374) were both retirees with engine bothers. Fastest lap went to Italian Luigino Grassi who had hired the Ralt RT1 normally driven by Terry Perkins for the day.

A very disappointing field of 5 cars arrived at the superb Cadwell Park to do battle in this 15 lap non-championship race. The race was dominated by Chris Barnett who led from start to finish in his March-BMW, Ingo Hoffman gave chase in his March-Novamotor but he was hampered by having made a poor start. The only other finisher was the Modus of Pete Clark after Ken Silverstone retired his March 743 on lap 5 when his gearbox failed and Peter Dugdale spun his March 733/743 at Charlies on the tenth lap. Dugdale was lucky to escape serious injury both to him self and his car when he went across the infield, through a hedge and hit a marshalls car.

Another round of the BP Super Visco Static British F3 Championship, Alex Ribeiro took pole position from Dick Parsons in his Modus M1 with the works car of Danny Sullivan completing the front row.

It began to rain just before the start of the race and all the teams had to scurry around to fit wet weather tyres in a hurry. After the warm up lap the cars lined up on the grid in a very untidy manner, as can be seen from the picture at the top of this page both Ribeiro and Sullivan on the front row stopped ahead of their correct starting position.

Nilsson made a great start from the second row and leapt straight into the lead, Ribeiro made a complete hash of his getaway with his car apparently in reverse, Ribeiro got away last and made it all the way to Sear where he hit the spun Ray of Stephen South. Ribeiro works March was written off and South got a heavy bang on the head that left him a little dazed. Also out on the first lap was Parsons when he tried to take the lead from Nilsson at Russell, he left the track and hit the bank.
Pierre Dieudonné moved his March up to second place followed by Sullivan, Patrick Neve and Ingo Hoffman. Sullivan soon lost places to Neve and Hoffman as his engine began to misfire in the wet conditions, and he fell further back as the Marches of Chris Barnett and Hervé Regout demoted him and then Tony Rouff’s Ehrlich and Ian Taylor’s GRD followed suit.
As the race moved on to lap 17 and the track began to dry out Dieudonné began to close up on Nilsson and Neve lost a place to Hoffman as his engine suffered from fuel injection bothers. Hoffman’s March was suffering from a battered nosecone but it didn’t seem to be hampering the Brazilian’s progress. Despite Dieudonné closing in Nilsson kept his nerve and held on to take the win by just over three seconds. Neve fell further back on lap 24 when Chris Barnett passed him after a steady drive and Regout nearly caught Neve on the line but the Belgian held onto fifth by 0.2 seconds.

Race Report: Anderstorp, 8 June 1975

andestorp_8_6_75

As a support race for the Swedish GP and the latest round of the BP Super Visco Static Championship an excellent field arrived at Anderstorp with most of the top UK runners mixing with the best of the Scandinavian teams. There were also a number of some of the faster Italian cars making the long journey North. There were a few notable absentees, the two Ralts of the Perkins brothers and Ian Taylor’s works GRD as well as Monaco F3 winner Renzo Zorzi. There were some unkind suggestions that the stricter Swedish scrutineers might not be completely happy with the latter’s GRD-Lancia had it arrived.

Practice was dominated by the Marches with Alex Ribeiro fastest ahead of Conny Andersson and Gaudenzio Mantova. Gunnar Nilsson managed to badly damage the rear suspension on his March following a journey over the kerbs, luckily the F1 team were able to supply the necessary spares to repair the car for the race. Non-starters included the B&O March of Pierre Dieudonné after the Belgian seriously damaged his chassis with an off into the catch fencing during practice. Also out was Patrick Neve who burnt the clutch on the Safir when trying to negotiate the spectators as he drove to the marshalling area.

Conny Andersson made a good getaway and entering the first corner he took the outside line and took the lead ahead of Alex Ribeiro who had tried to dive up the inside. Mantova initially took third but Nilsson, who wasn’t totally happy with his rebuilt car, demoted him to third during the first lap. Mantova lost some more places with a spin and then retired, there was obviously something amiss with his March 753.
Nilsson passed team mate Ribeiro on lap 2 and the three leaders Andersson, Nilsson and Ribeiro began to pull away at a second a lap from their pursuers lead by Conny Lungfeldt in Conny Andersson’s old March 743. Danny Sullivan, who might have expected to give the leaders a run for their money, had to pit to have some stones removed from the cockpit that were jamming his clutch pedal. Ribeiro suddenly disappeared from third on lap 9, his driving had been getting more and more untidy as the Brazilian battled with a slow puncture and he eventually lost control of the car and spun. Ribeiro made it back to the pits and had a new tyre fitted, he resumed a couple of laps down behind Nilsson and in front of Ljungfeldt on the road. Nilsson closed the small gap to Andersson on lap 11 when the Swede who had been trying to escape Nilsson’s attentions hit the chicane fortunately without damaging his car.
The lapped Ribeiro had now caught up with Nilsson and immediately began to attack him, with two laps to go he pulled alongside Nilsson on the main straight and promptly left his braking too late. The Brazilian March hit the side of the Swedish version and vaulted over its front wheels, Nilsson was out on the spot whilst Ribeiro continued only to spin shortly afterwards and retire as his rear wing was hanging askew. Nilsson was justifiably furious saying afterwards “There’s no excuse for doing something as stupid as Ribeiro did, even when you’re both on the same lap, and when you’re in the same team….”.
Ribeiro’s excuse was that he had been after the 500 Crowns prize for the fastest lap, no one else seemed convinced that this explained his actions.
Conny Ljungfeldt took advantage of Nilsson’s misfortune to take second and make it a Rotel March 1-2, Clas Sigurdson took third in his elderly Brabham BT41 with Gunnar Nordström’s Warsteiner Modus fourth. Stephen South, whose engine hasn’t been rebuilt all season, had been running fifth but he lost a place to Luciano Pavesi’s Brabham BT41 on the last lap, Pavesi had driven up from the back of the grid following a troubled practice. Bob Arnott came home in tenth hampered by a down on power engine and Graham Hamilton retired with his rear wing at a funny angle following a big spin.

A support race for the 1000 km Sports Car race and round 4 of the German F3 Championship, the Texaco Trophy was held over 6 laps of the full 22.835 km circuit.

Friday’s practice session was cold and miserable and most runners seemed uninterested in really going for a time, Conny Andersson went the quickest at 8:14.3, a tenth up on Freddy Kottulinsky. It nearly all went wrong for Andersson when he came up to pass a Maco at the Karussel, thinking it was being driven by the experienced Ernst Maring Andersson dived inside expecting to be given room. However it was the identical orange coloured Jaegermeister team car of the less careful Erhard Miltz who chopped Andersson denting the tub on the Swede’s March 753. Two men who came to grief were Graham Hamilton in the Ecurie Ecosse March 753 who blew an engine after half a lap and with no spare was out of the race as was Piergiovanni Tenani who removed a rear wheel on his March 743.
Saturday practice was much warmer and it was Conny Andersson who was soon setting a hot pace, lap by lap he reduced his times until he took the pole with an 8:04.7 lap that was over three seconds faster than Kottulinsky and some 10 seconds under Giorgio Francia’s lap record. Third fastest was the now quite elderly Alpine of Dieter Kern with Francia’s Maco in fourth.

Kottulinsky lead the other 33 cars away from the grid but by the end of the lap he had surrendered first place to Andersson, third was Kern from Francia, Gunnar Nordström, Ernst Maring, Renzo Zorzi, Ulf Svensson, Rudolf Dötsch, Clas Sigurdsson and Heinz Lange. Andersson set a new lap record of 8:07.1 on lap 2 but Kottulinsky wasn’t letting him get away whilst Kern was dropping away in third. Nordström pushed Francia back a place on the second lap but the Italian stayed in close contact. On lap 3 Kottulinsky came through the North Curve in the lead with Andersson in second and in some difficulties with the rear of his March. For a minute it looked as if Andersson would pull off the track but he continued but the March stopped part way round the lap with a broken damper.
By lap 4 Kottulinsky had a lead of 8.5 seconds from Kern in second who was falling further back with every lap. Nordström was eight seconds back in third with Francia another six seconds away in fourth, next there was a big dice for fifth between Maring, Dötsch, Svensson and Zorzi. Sigurdson had fallen away from this group and was having a lone race ahead of the GRD 373s of Bernhard Brack and Hakan Alriksson. Lasse Karlsson retired his old Brabham BT38 at this time with engine failure, he hadn’t qualified but had been allowed to start the race anyway.
With two laps to go Dötsch had dropped to the back of the fifth placed battle and in an effort to get back on terms he shunted Svensson up the rear at the Swallow Tail Curve. Both cars hurtled off the track, Dötsch wrote his March 753 off against the Armco whilst Svensson’s Brabham BT41 suffered rear end damage.
There were no further incidents or positional changes so at the chequered flag it was Kottulinsky who took the win by twelve seconds from Kern, Kottulinsky also setting a new lap record on the fifth lap.

The latest round of the BP Super Visco Static round was at Thruxton and once again it was a works March on pole, Gunnar Nilsson taking the fastest time in practice. Second quickest was the Safir of Patrick Neve which this week was fitted with a Holbay Ford twin-cam instead of the Pinto unit that had been used previously. Those in trouble during practice included Terry Perkins who blew a head gasket in his Ralt which caused him to miss the race and Ian Taylor whose GRD-Holbay was suffering from overheating problems.

Once again it was Gunnar Nilsson who leapt into the lead with Patrick Neve making a great start to slot into second followed by Danny Sullivan and Alex Ribeiro. Suddenly on the third lap the race was stopped, Rupert Keegan’s March stripped second gear at the start, his slowing March was struck on the left front wheel by Tony Rouff’s Ehrlich and both cars spun into the barrier with Rouff’s car being launched over Keegan’s. The red flags were shown when it was clear that Keegan was trapped by his foot in the car and needed to be cut out, fortunately his injuries were relatively light, a broken toe and heavy bruising to his legs and feet.
The race was restarted with Nilsson once again taking the lead but this time Ribeiro and Sullivan filled second and third ahead of Neve. The Safir seemed faster that the Modus in a straight line and it didn’t take Neve long to pass Sullivan. Nilsson was extending his lead at the front and his task was made easier as Ribeiro spun at the chicane on the sixth lap, both Neve and Sullivan were badly held up in avoiding the rotating Brazilian. Sullivan recovered the fastest to take second although once again after four laps of chasing the Modus Neve’s speed advantage gave him second. Neve chased after Nilsson who backed off a little to save his tyres but he had the race well in hand and the Swede came home by two seconds to claim the win, Sullivan took third from a fast closing Hervé Regout.
Those out of luck included Ian Taylor whose engine overheated again, Chris Barnett retired with a broken rocker and Ingo Hoffman who was out after three laps with his throttle stuck open.
